You're building a website. Things are going hunky dory with your decision. You've hired a firm to design, develop, and optimize your website. And to "Sweeten the pot", they're going to shoot your website to the top of Google! Sure there's going to be a nominal fee for search engine submission, but they assure you that by having them develop your web presence, your site will be #1.

If 0 red flags are triggered by that last paragraph, we definitely need to talk.  Seriously though, there is a common misconception in the world of the web today.  Having a website doesn't automatically mean you will organically find yourself at the top of search engines. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Firms that charge an overage for "Search Engine Submission" are taking you to the cleaner. Search engines have evolved over time. They have become intelligent enough to index (find and catalogue) your website after a short time. Instead, ask that they prepare your sitemap properly.

  • If your website is built with a scripting language, your designer should have your URL's set to be SEF (Search Engine Friendly). Search engines don' t take kindly to URL's that look like this: www.website.com/index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=69&amp.  That's just nonsense and poor for your site.

  • An agency that doesn't inform you that Organic Page Rank takes work, is lying to you. Period.

The SEO Dragon
Doesn't Bite
One of the main things you can do to increase your searchability is making your copy read human. Avoid "Keyword Dumping". There's nothing worse than having a ton of words that may relate to your website, topics, etc. on your site (150 bonus points for white text on a white background). When people are searching for something, they typically search how they would think or say it. Searching for "American Idol results" would typically appear as: "Who won American Idol last night", not "American Idol, Simon Cowell, Fox, American, Idol, Idol on Fox".

Another way to boost your site traffic is to have a blogging component to your website. Being that Google does not search and rank sites based on Meta Tags any longer, it's a better idea to provide new content on a regular basis.

Keep in mind that technology is constantly changing. Search algorithms used by search engines are growing every day. You have to put proper efforts into your organic searchability in order to see desired results.
